Your shopfront is more than just a pane of glass – it’s a first impression, a layer of protection, and a compliance requirement for any commercial property. While aesthetics are important, the real value lies in safety and security. That’s why choosing the right shopfront glass is about more than looks; it’s about strength, durability, and peace of mind.
What Makes Safety Glass Different?
Unlike standard float glass, safety glass is manufactured to handle impact and reduce risks. It doesn’t crack into dangerous shards but instead absorbs and disperses energy in a way that keeps people and property safer.
There are two main types commonly used in shopfronts:
Toughened Glass (Tempered Glass)
Heated to over 600°C and rapidly cooled, toughened glass is up to five times stronger than ordinary glass. If it breaks, it crumbles into small blunt fragments rather than sharp edges. It’s often used in shopfront windows, doors, and internal partitions.
Toughened glass is usually used where a portion of the shopfront will be covered in signwriting as it is resistant to thermal stress.
Laminated Glass
Made by bonding two layers of glass with a tough interlayer (often PVB), laminated glass holds together when broken. This makes it ideal for security, as it maintains its integrity and a good portion of its strength even after it has been cracked. Banks, jewellery stores, and retail outlets often prefer laminated safety glass for shopfronts.
Additionally, it doesn’t have to go through a toughening process, this means some windows can be replaced with a much shorter lead time, avoiding a costly board up fee.
Thickness Options and Where They’re Used
- 6mm Toughened Glass – A popular choice for standard shopfronts where durability and safety are needed without excessive weight.
- 10–12mm Toughened Glass – Offers extra resilience, ideal for high-traffic areas or larger shopfront panes.
- 6.38mm to 12.76mm Laminated Glass – The variation comes from the thickness of the glass sheets and the interlayer. Thicker options provide enhanced acoustic insulation and security, which is why many businesses use them for noise reduction on busy streets.
Fact:Â Did you know laminated glass can even block up to 99% of UV rays? That means it helps protect your stock and displays from fading under sunlight.
Why Safety Glass Matters for Businesses
Security Against Break –Ins – Laminated glass can take multiple strikes from blunt objects without giving way, buying you precious time against intruders.
Customer and Staff Safety – Toughened glass reduces the risk of injury in a case of breakage.
Building Code Compliance – In New Zealand, the Building Code (NZS 4223) specifies safety glass for commercial glazing in areas prone to human impact.
